year’s collection of ornaments had an array of new concepts to pique our
interest. Barbie came to us for the first time as a special club
porcelain edition, Harry Potter and friends visited in pewter while inside
books, and Hallmark Canada began a series exclusive to their post offices.
The Hallmark ornaments’ theme of blown glass featured Star Trek and Lionel pieces, our
Peanuts friends came in a promotional continuity, a new decade was carved (this
one is cool), and Disney came by airplane, ski lift, and a villain’s wrath. Hallmark Barbie ornaments began
anew with the title “A Celebration of Barbie.”
If you thought you were
seeing double, Hallmark saw what you liked, and gave you more. There were
Harley-Davidsons in leather, as a motorcycle, or just an engine. Hallmark Frosty
Friends ornaments
came in series, in pewter, and blown glass. Wizard of Oz came in light
and sound, dancing, and in miniature. You say you like Scarlett O’Hara-
there’s a Rhett Butler. And if you like Hallmark
Mary’s Angels, maybe a lighted piece should illuminate your
tree, too. Hallmark Madame
Alexander ornaments came
along as Holly and a Twilight Angel. Heck, those silly Mitford Snowmen
came alone, as a foursome, or an array of individual blown glass.
Even the most
avid collectors hustled to find the elusive Millennium Express, Gifts of the
Grinch, Lucy is Enceinte, and the concluding Holy Family piece, The Shepherds.
With the untimely passing of NASCAR racer Dale Earnhardt in February of
2001, the Hallmark
ornament celebrating his success and fandom immediately became
sought-after.
