Christmas in the Netherlands is a treat for young and old alike as they eagerly await the arrival of St. Nicholas, or Sinterklaas, on the eve of December 5.  Dressed in a robe and hat embellished with lacy, floral pattering, Sinterklaas leaves the children gifts in wooden shoes placed by the hearth.
