The P-51 Mustang, wich made major contributions toward the Allied victory in World War II was originally developed as the result of a British request for fighters to be built by North American Aviation.
Early Mustangs were powered by Allisonm, but beginning with the P-51B, the power plant was changed to a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine built in the United States by Packard.
